Good research starts with good references
The source system prioritizes UNESCO, Pakistan's Department of Archaeology & Museums, provincial archaeology departments, museums, universities, archaeological reports and peer-reviewed scholarship. Search-engine snippets and unsourced social posts can help locate a lead, but they should not be treated as final evidence.
Source hierarchy
- Primary evidence: excavation reports, inscriptions, field records, archival documents, museum catalogues and measured surveys.
- Institutional sources: UNESCO and official heritage departments.
- Scholarly secondary research: peer-reviewed articles, academic books and university publications.
- Public reference material: reputable encyclopedic or heritage resources used with verification.
If a citation cannot be verified, this website should label the entry “Source verification required” rather than invent a reference.
Beyond the four federal references
Alongside UNESCO and the federal Department of Archaeology & Museums, provincial and territorial institutions hold important records for sites within their jurisdiction: the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Directorate of Archaeology & Museums, the Government of Sindh Culture, Tourism & Antiquities Department, the Government of Punjab's heritage and archaeology bodies, the Gilgit-Baltistan Directorate of Archaeology, and the AJK Department of Archaeology & Tourism. Independent conservation bodies such as the Aga Khan Trust for Culture also publish detailed documentation for sites they have restored, including Lahore's Walled City, Baltit and Altit forts, and Shigar Fort.
